Apple’s AI Crossroads: Can WWDC 2025 Deliver the Promised Land?

Apple's AI Crossroads: Can WWDC 2025 Deliver the Promised Land?

Hustler Words – Last year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) generated considerable buzz around Apple’s foray into artificial intelligence. The tech giant promised an AI platform to rival Google and OpenAI, showcasing compelling demos. However, the subsequent reality has fallen short, leaving developers and consumers alike disappointed. Apple’s broader AI struggles have become increasingly apparent. Delays plague its personalized intelligence initiatives, and the rollout of new tools has been inconsistent. The envisioned seamless integration of on-device AI, enhanced Siri interactions, and powerful developer capabilities remains unrealized.

The staggered rollout of Apple Intelligence features, coupled with delays to the promised context-aware Siri, has significantly weakened Apple’s AI value proposition. Developers lack the tools to fully leverage AI-powered Siri, and users are deprived of the promised in-app functionalities. This represents a missed opportunity for Apple to create more engaging app experiences, leaving its AI stack looking less competitive against rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

As WWDC 2025 approaches, expectations are tempered. The hope now centers on incremental improvements: smoother AI integration into native apps and developer tools that actually utilize Apple’s AI capabilities. Significant advancements on the Siri front are not anticipated.

A key opportunity for Apple lies in facilitating AI-assisted app development. The rise of tools like Cursor, Replit, and Bolt.new demonstrates the ease of code generation, enabling faster product development. AI-powered apps have proven highly successful on the web, as exemplified by ChatGPT’s popularity before launching native apps. Platforms like WordPress, Hostinger, Canva, and Figma empower non-technical users to create simple apps using natural language prompts. Apple must modernize its approach to match this trend.

Ideally, new AI tools should empower more developers to create and publish apps on the App Store, enriching the iOS ecosystem and generating new revenue streams for Apple. This is particularly crucial given the legal challenges to App Store fees. While Apple has announced initiatives like Swift Assist (a coding assistant for Xcode), many remain unreleased. Reports suggest Apple is developing an Anthropic-powered AI coding tool and plans to open access to its own AI models for developers. The aim is to simplify iOS app development for both professionals and newcomers.

However, the web’s dominance as an application distribution platform and recent legal rulings pose significant hurdles. A U.S. court ruling mandates the removal of restrictions on linking to external payment methods for in-app digital purchases, prohibiting Apple from charging fees for such transactions. This decision, upheld on appeal, could inspire similar regulatory actions globally. While Apple reported $1.3 trillion in billings and sales in 2024, with 90% commission-free, even a small percentage of the remaining $130 billion represents substantial revenue loss.

Apple must urgently redefine its ecosystem’s value proposition. The uncertainty around commission cuts necessitates innovative App Store features to incentivize developers to prioritize native iOS apps. At WWDC 2025, Apple faces the challenge of not only competing with rapidly advancing AI rivals but also adapting to evolving legal and economic landscapes. Success hinges on delivering tangible AI advancements for both end-users and developers, especially in a world where AI is accelerating technological progress. Falling behind is simply not an option.
