Last summer, Sapiom began developing a system that enables AI agents to autonomously and securely acquire and utilize essential digital resources—ranging from software and APIs to data and computational power. Essentially, Sapiom is building the payment rails that allow AI to intelligently purchase the services it requires, entirely on its own.

Every interaction an AI agent has with an external service, such as leveraging Twilio for sending text messages, inherently involves authentication and a corresponding micro-payment. Sapiom’s core mission is to abstract away this intricate process, making it invisible and seamless. The platform empowers AI agents to make independent purchasing decisions, determining what services to acquire and precisely when, without necessitating human oversight or manual intervention.

Kumar, who has engaged with numerous startups in the burgeoning AI payments sector, asserts that Zerbib’s strategic focus on developing a robust financial layer for enterprise-level AI agents—rather than individual consumers—is precisely what the industry needs to unlock the full potential of autonomous AI. This conviction led Accel to spearhead Sapiom’s substantial $15 million seed funding round, drawing participation from a distinguished roster of investors including Okta Ventures, Gradient Ventures, Array Ventures, Menlo Ventures, Anthropic, and Coinbase Ventures.
Kumar elaborated on the pervasive nature of these micro-transactions, telling Hustler Words, "If you truly consider it, every API call represents a payment. Each text message sent incurs a cost. Every time you provision a server instance on AWS, it’s a financial transaction."
While Sapiom is still in its nascent stages, the startup harbors ambitious aspirations for its infrastructure solution. It aims to become an indispensable component for "vibe-coding" platforms and other companies developing sophisticated AI agents destined for increasingly autonomous roles. For instance, a creator building an app with SMS capabilities via a vibe-coding tool would no longer need to manually sign up for Twilio, input credit card details, and painstakingly copy API keys into their codebase. Instead, Sapiom orchestrates these backend processes, with the cost of Twilio’s services seamlessly passed through and charged to the app builder by their chosen vibe-coding platform, be it Lovable, Bolt, or another.
Although Sapiom’s immediate strategy is concentrated on B2B solutions, the long-term implications of its technology are profound. It holds the potential to eventually empower personal AI agents to manage a wide array of consumer transactions. The vision of individuals entrusting AI agents with independent financial decisions—such as ordering an Uber or making purchases on Amazon—is undeniably compelling. However, Zerbib maintains a pragmatic outlook, believing that AI’s advent won’t inherently drive increased consumer spending. This perspective reinforces his current strategic emphasis on constructing robust financial frameworks for businesses, laying the groundwork for a truly autonomous digital economy.
