Hustler Words – The remnants of Lilium, the ambitious electric aircraft startup that faltered last year, are finding new life within Archer Aviation. Despite attempts to restructure, Lilium’s assets were ultimately put up for bid, with Archer emerging as the victor, securing a treasure trove of patents for €18 million ($21 million), surpassing bids from Ambitious Air Mobility Group and even Joby Aviation.
Lilium, founded in 2015, aimed to revolutionize regional air travel with its vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft. After raising over $1 billion and going public in 2021 via a SPAC merger, the company struggled to deliver on its promises, burning through capital despite securing high-profile investors and customer orders.

Archer’s acquisition includes 300 of Lilium’s patents, covering crucial eVTOL technologies such as high-voltage systems, flight controls, ducted fans, and advanced aircraft design. An Archer spokesperson hailed these patents as a "strong addition" to their intellectual property portfolio, now exceeding 1,000 global patent assets.

While Archer’s initial focus was on air taxi networks, the company has expanded into defense applications, including a partnership with Anduril to develop hybrid VTOL aircraft. Lilium’s ducted fan technology could potentially extend Archer’s reach into light-sport or regional electric flight, opening new avenues beyond its original mission.
The acquisition marks a significant step for Archer, potentially accelerating its technological development and expanding its market opportunities. It also represents a second chance for Lilium’s innovations, ensuring that its vision for electric aviation continues to evolve.
