Space Force's $4B Gamble: Commercial Satellites to the Rescue?

Hustler Words – The U.S. Space Force is placing a significant bet on commercial innovation to bolster its secure communication capabilities for warfighters. In a move signaling a shift in procurement strategy, the Space Force has awarded multiple contracts to both established defense giants and venture-backed startups in a $4 billion contest to develop jam-resistant satellite communications.

The Protected Tactical Satcom (PTS) program aims to provide secure battlefield communications through advanced satellite technology. While Boeing and Northrop Grumman had previously secured contracts to develop prototype payloads for geostationary orbit satellites, the latest phase focuses on purpose-built satellites designed for tactical forces.

On Tuesday, the Space Force announced five additional contracts for the design and demonstration of these specialized satellites. Alongside Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Viasat, and Intelsat, Astranis, a San Francisco-based startup, joins the ranks. Intelsat will source its satellite bus from K2 Space, another venture-backed firm.

The initial awards, totaling $37.3 million, represent a fraction of the program’s potential $4 billion ceiling. This opens the door for the winners to secure substantial defense contracts in the future.

The firms will refine their designs until January 2026, after which the Space Force will select a single design for the first satellite, slated for launch in 2028. Further production awards will also be distributed in 2028.

These PTS-G contracts mark a departure from traditional military procurement of geostationary satellites, which have historically been characterized by lengthy timelines and exorbitant costs, often exceeding hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars per satellite.

The Space Force’s strategy emphasizes leveraging the agility and speed of commercial entities while fostering competition through the selection of multiple vendors during the initial program phase.

"Our PTS-G contract transforms how SSC acquires SATCOM capability for the warfighter," stated program executive officer Cordell DeLaPena Jr. in a press release. "The incorporation of commercial baseline designs to meet military capability significantly enhances the Space Force’s speed and efficiency to add capability to meet emerging threats."
