Hustler Words – In a significant move signaling a broader shift in global manufacturing, Modal Motors is embarking on an ambitious quest to entirely decouple the United States from China’s influence in electric motor production. This bold initiative, spearheaded by industry veteran Michael Van Steenburg, aims to redefine domestic manufacturing, particularly within critical hard tech sectors like drones and robotics, by eliminating reliance on rare-earth magnets.
Van Steenburg, who has dedicated the past decade to developing diverse electric motors across North America, is now channeling his expertise into Modal Motors with a singular, disruptive vision. His startup’s core strategy involves pioneering rare-earth-free motor designs, a direct challenge to China’s near-monopoly on these essential materials and a decisive step towards securing an independent U.S. supply chain.
As one of the select founders chosen to compete in the prestigious Startup Battlefield 200 at Hustler Words Disrupt next month, Van Steenburg believes his message carries an urgent geopolitical weight. "China’s already flexed its muscles a couple times," he stated, referencing past instances where Beijing restricted access to rare-earth products, underscoring the vulnerability inherent in current supply chains.

While other enterprises are also pursuing the establishment of domestic electric motor manufacturing, Van Steenburg contends their approach is fundamentally flawed. These companies, he argues, continue to build motors dependent on rare-earth magnets, implicitly banking on a domestic rare-earth supply chain that remains years, if not decades, away from full operational capacity. "Other people are ‘reshoring,’ [but] they’re basically knocking off Chinese motors and just doing it in the U.S.," he explained. "It’s going to still be a while longer before they can actually replace China." Modal Motors, in contrast, seeks to bypass this bottleneck entirely.
Ahead of its appearance at Disrupt, Modal Motors is developing two innovative products. The first is a compact electric motor engineered for applications ranging from drones to fans, blowers, and actuators. According to the startup’s official site, this motor is meticulously designed to "minimize mass while delivering maximum torque density and efficiency," crucial for performance-sensitive devices.
The more revolutionary offering is dubbed the "Hybrid Enigma Drive," a planar, or flat, electric motor specifically designed to integrate seamlessly into lower-profile spaces, opening up new possibilities for product design and integration.
Van Steenburg’s vision is deeply rooted in his extensive experience within the automotive industry, where he spent decades honing his craft. There’s a notable historical irony to his current mission; in the late 1990s, he contributed to a hybrid gas-electric drivetrain project that China had intended for its "People’s Car." Reflecting on this past, he finds it "kind of comical," yet it reinforces his enduring "outsider streak" and unwavering commitment to tackling complex challenges.
"I always tell people that the clock started ticking 25 years ago," Van Steenburg recounted, "and in that whole time, I’ve watched a slow-motion train wreck as China’s been going around the world, grabbing mines, grabbing mineral rights, doing all these things, and slowly but surely monopolizing the entire rare-earth supply chain." Modal Motors represents a direct counter-response to this long-unfolding strategic maneuver, aiming to forge a path to true industrial autonomy for the U.S. in the critical realm of electric propulsion.
