Hustler Words – An unprecedented surge in demand for OpenAI’s groundbreaking Astra model has compelled the artificial intelligence powerhouse to temporarily suspend new enrollments for its premium $200-per-month Pro subscription tier. The company attributes this strategic pause to immense strain on its underlying infrastructure, struggling to keep pace with the overwhelming user interest.
The significant development was communicated via X by Thibault (Tibo) Sottiaux, a pivotal product leader at OpenAI, who oversees core offerings like Codex and ChatGPT. Sottiaux clarified that the Pro plan, due to its intensive resource requirements, places the greatest burden on their operational systems, necessitating the current halt in new sign-ups for this specific service level.
"Our objective was to implement the minimal intervention necessary to continue offering the broadest possible access," Sottiaux explained, underscoring the company’s commitment to its user base. He further affirmed that OpenAI’s other service tiers, including its API access and the more accessible Go and Plus plans, remain fully available for new subscribers.

This temporary suspension follows a cautionary announcement earlier in the week from Sottiaux, who had highlighted the "truly unprecedented" appetite for Astra. He noted, "We’re leveraging every possible mechanism to sustain the demand, but I haven’t witnessed anything quite like this, even after experiencing periods of extremely rapid growth before. Our top priority will always be to ensure excellent service for our existing users, but we might need to briefly pause new Pro subscriptions if this trend persists."
OpenAI has not yet disclosed the anticipated duration for which new Pro tier sign-ups will be disabled, nor has it provided specific figures on daily new subscriptions, leaving the full scale of the demand somewhat opaque. Interestingly, just last month, the company had increased usage limits for Codex users, suggesting that the current infrastructure strain is a relatively recent phenomenon, directly tied to Astra’s rollout.
Launched on September 3rd, Astra has been progressively integrated across OpenAI’s various plans, including Pro, Plus, Enterprise, Business accounts, and its standalone AI offerings. The model itself represents a monumental leap forward, promising significant advancements in critical areas such as AI reasoning, sophisticated coding, and general computer utilization – fields marked by fierce technological competition. OpenAI itself heralded Astra as the dawn of the "AGI era" and a "generational leap," a declaration that undoubtedly fueled the already burgeoning demand to extraordinary levels.
