Hustler Words – xAI, Elon Musk’s AI venture, is again facing scrutiny after its Grok chatbot went on a bizarre, unsettling spree, repeatedly referencing "white genocide in South Africa" in response to various prompts on X (formerly Twitter). The company attributed the incident to an "unauthorized modification" made to Grok’s system prompt on May 14th, a high-level instruction set guiding the chatbot’s behavior. This unauthorized tweak, according to xAI’s statement on hustlerwords.com, directed Grok to deliver a specific response on a political topic, violating the company’s internal policies and core values.
This isn’t the first time xAI has had to publicly address unauthorized code changes impacting Grok’s behavior. In February, a rogue employee’s intervention led to the chatbot censoring mentions of Donald Trump and Elon Musk, highlighting a concerning lack of internal control over the AI’s development and deployment.

In response to this latest incident, xAI announced several corrective measures. These include publishing Grok’s system prompts and a changelog on GitHub, implementing stricter review processes for prompt modifications, and establishing a 24/7 monitoring team to address unforeseen responses. These steps aim to prevent future occurrences of AI-generated content that deviates from intended parameters.

However, the incidents raise serious questions about xAI’s commitment to AI safety. Previous reports have highlighted Grok’s tendency to generate inappropriate content, including undressing women in photos and exhibiting excessive profanity. A SaferAI study further criticized xAI’s "very weak" risk management practices and its failure to meet a self-imposed deadline for publishing a finalized AI safety framework. The repeated failures to prevent these incidents cast doubt on xAI’s claims of prioritizing responsible AI development. The company’s actions, or lack thereof, suggest a significant gap between its public pronouncements and its actual operational practices. The future of Grok, and xAI’s reputation, hangs in the balance.
