Given the inherently capital-intensive nature of fusion development, investors are naturally receptive to portfolio companies diversifying their financial backing. Enter the defense sector, which has long investigated directed energy weapons but has seen a surge in interest due to the transformative impact of drone warfare. Conventional air defense mechanisms, designed for larger, crewed aircraft, prove economically impractical against swarms of inexpensive unmanned aerial vehicles. A stark illustration of this inefficiency occurred roughly a decade ago when a U.S. ally deployed a multi-million dollar Patriot missile to neutralize a mere $200 consumer drone.

Laser-based weaponry offers a compelling alternative, fundamentally altering the cost-benefit calculus. Unlike single-use, high-cost missiles, these systems can engage targets rapidly and at a significantly lower per-shot expense, drawing power from onboard generators, ship reactors, or engines. A prime example emerged recently with Denver-based Xcimer, a laser-based fusion startup, announcing a strategic partnership and investment from RTX, the industrial giant encompassing defense contractor Raytheon. This collaboration sees RTX Ventures providing capital to Xcimer, while RTX gains an avenue to investigate integrating Xcimer’s potent laser technology into its own defense applications. Xcimer currently boasts what it claims is the world’s most powerful privately owned laser system, intended for its ambitious power plant design where lasers will compress fuel targets to initiate fusion. While its current "Phoenix" system operates at a scale below commercial power generation requirements, its formidable capabilities have undeniably piqued the interest of military strategists.

Xcimer is not alone in navigating this burgeoning defense landscape. Last month, Pacific Fusion formalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to collaborate on high-energy-density fusion research. The company recently commenced construction on a demonstration facility in New Mexico, strategically located near the Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories. Although its primary objective is to prove net energy gain from its fusion design, the facility’s capabilities extend beyond this. The fusion reactions anticipated at Pacific Fusion’s site are projected to significantly surpass the power levels currently utilized by the government for certain nuclear weapons-related experiments.

"The facility we are developing possesses significant utility within this world-leading defense application space," Keith LeChein, Pacific Fusion’s co-founder and Chief Technical Officer, recently shared with hustlerwords.com. This alignment is no mere happenstance; Carrie von Muench, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, confirmed that defense applications were consistently a consideration. LeChein himself, the architect of the company’s foundational technology, brings a wealth of experience from his prior tenures at prestigious institutions like Sandia National Laboratories, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and the National Nuclear Security Administration.

While fusion power has advanced considerably since its conceptualization by early weapons scientists, its profound implications for national security have remained relevant. This renewed synergy between fusion innovation and defense imperatives appears to be a timely development, poised to provide a substantial impetus to pioneering fusion startups.
