Hustler Words – While it might look like a prop from a high-budget superhero movie, PNOÉ’s latest hardware is designed for something far more practical than cinematic villainy. The company, which operates out of Malden, Massachusetts, and Athens, Greece, is set to debut the PNOÉ 2.0 on October 1. This sleek, redesigned mask aims to democratize metabolic testing—a process traditionally reserved for expensive clinical laboratories and elite athletes.
The breakthrough lies in its simplicity. Unlike previous iterations that required a trained technician to oversee the process, the new PNOÉ 2.0 is a self-serve device. According to CEO and co-founder Apostolos Atsalakis, a user can simply walk into a fitness center, don the mask, and complete an eight-minute breathing session to receive deep physiological insights. This shift from professional-led to user-led testing allows the technology to move beyond specialized labs and into mainstream gyms, pharmacies, and wellness centers.
The science of metabolic testing—analyzing gas exchange to determine how the body utilizes energy—is well-established but has long been hindered by bulky, cumbersome equipment. PNOÉ is bridging the gap between the "best guess" estimates provided by consumer smartwatches and the high-end precision of medical metabolic carts. By capturing 23 distinct biomarkers, the device measures critical metrics such as VO2 max (cardiorespiratory fitness), resting metabolic rate, and metabolic flexibility—the body’s ability to switch between burning fats and carbohydrates.

"We made it accessible to everyone," Atsalakis noted, emphasizing that the device provides a "scorecard" for personal health. In an era where longevity and VO2 max are becoming central pillars of the wellness movement, having a portable, accurate way to track these metrics is a significant advantage.
Design was a priority for the 2.0 version. Developed in collaboration with Milan’s Design Group Italia, the device is more compact and reliable than its predecessor. To address hygiene concerns in shared environments, the electronic components are detachable from the silicone mask, allowing businesses to share the expensive hardware while maintaining individual, sanitary masks for every client.
While the technology is sophisticated, PNOÉ remains clear about its regulatory status. The device is categorized as a wellness tool rather than a medical diagnostic instrument and is not FDA-cleared. It functions similarly to a high-tech scale, providing data for lifestyle optimization rather than medical prescriptions. However, the company’s long-term vision includes exploring how breath analysis might eventually flag early signs of disease, though Atsalakis admits that such clinical applications are still years away.
PNOÉ’s business model is strictly B2B, offering a "business in a box" subscription to high-end clients. The company’s impressive roster already includes Equinox, Red Bull, the NBA, and Four Seasons hotels. With a recent $11 million funding round and a reported 100% annual growth rate, the startup is positioned to dominate the intersection of fitness and longevity tech. As they prepare for a Series B round in the coming year, PNOÉ is looking to turn the "Bane-like" mask into a household staple for the health-conscious consumer.
