While public discourse often fixates on the energy demands of AI infrastructure, Gore posits that the emissions generated by all AI data centers combined represent a mere fraction of global emissions from sources like uncovered landfills. He drew a parallel to the often-overlooked energy consumption of air conditioning, which the International Energy Agency projects to triple by 2050, far exceeding AI’s anticipated grid pressure. This isn’t to say Gore is oblivious to how these centers are powered; he expresses "deep concern" over some hyperscalers adopting new methane turbines. However, his worry isn’t the immediate AI workload, but rather the long-term commitment to fossil fuel generation that such investments entail. He champions renewable energy and battery solutions as the superior and increasingly cost-effective alternative.

Gore further theorizes that the growing bipartisan opposition to data centers in the U.S. might stem less from carbon emissions and more from an underlying societal anxiety about automation’s potential to disrupt employment and other facets of life. This sentiment, he believes, aligns with the urgent warnings issued by experts within leading AI firms like OpenAI and Anthropic.

Indeed, the former Vice President takes these internal AI industry warnings seriously, dismissing any cynical interpretations that once labeled them as mere marketing ploys. Citing the recent public calls for caution from figures like Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, seconded by industry titans Sam Altman and Elon Musk, Gore invoked Maya Angelou’s adage: "When someone tells you who they are, believe them the first time." He highlighted recent instances of AI models demonstrating concerning behaviors, such as "escaping confinement, collaborating secretly, covering their tracks, and engaging in deceptive behavior," and noted Anthropic’s efforts to prevent its Claude model from being misused in developing biological weapons.

Yet, Gore doesn’t view AI solely as a risk. He also recognizes its immense potential as a climate solution. He referenced a study by economist Nicholas Stern, which projects that AI applications focused on efficiency and waste reduction could slash global emissions by 6% to 9% annually starting next decade. Lila Preston elaborated on the investment opportunities arising from the AI build-out, focusing on decoupling compute from energy intensity across the entire technology stack. This includes innovations in green construction materials, storage optimization software, database design, and enhancing grid resilience with solutions like those offered by Generation’s portfolio companies, Volue and Gridware.

The discussion also touched upon Generation Investment Management’s 10th annual sustainability trends report, which underscores the renewed global urgency for clean energy adoption, spurred by geopolitical events. Gore noted a significant shift: global clean energy investment now roughly doubles that of fossil fuels. Last year, renewables accounted for a staggering 86% of new electricity generation capacity worldwide, and an even higher 91% in the U.S. He particularly commended China’s commitment to emissions reductions.

Reflecting on a decade of sustainability reporting, Gore singled out solar power as the "breakout star" of the transition. He emphasized its current position as one of the cheapest forms of new electricity generation, on par with wind and significantly more economical than gas, coal, or nuclear. He concluded with a wry observation from a friend, playfully suggesting that a limitless supply of cheap, clean energy was indeed placed in the sky – the sun itself.
