Hustler Words – Pivotal, a pioneering electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) firm notably supported by Google co-founder Larry Page, is navigating a significant leadership transition following the departure of its long-serving CEO, Ken Karklin.
Karklin, who has helmed the innovative aerospace company for over four years, stepped down from his position this week. A press release from Pivotal indicated he is "pursuing new endeavors," though no further specifics regarding the executive’s exit were provided by the company.
In a statement addressing his departure, Karklin reflected on his tenure, calling it the "privilege of my career." He emphasized Pivotal’s role in transforming the concept of light eVTOL from a mere promise into practical reality. Karklin asserted that the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector has evolved beyond theoretical prototypes and promotional announcements, now operating with tangible constraints and significant implications for its future. He expressed confidence that the groundwork laid during his leadership would propel the industry forward.
Taking the reins on an interim basis is Mike Ross, an experienced aviation executive who joined Pivotal’s board of directors last November. Karklin’s exit occurs approximately two years after the company initiated sales of its flagship personal aircraft, the Helix. This single-seat, lightweight electric vehicle, designed for individual flight, notably does not necessitate a pilot’s license for operation and carries a starting price tag of around $200,000.
In his own statement, Ross acknowledged Karklin’s "instrumental" leadership in shaping Pivotal’s current standing. He assured stakeholders that the company’s core team, strategic priorities, and product roadmap would remain "steady through this transition." He expressed eagerness to guide the company’s trajectory, particularly as it prepares to introduce its fourth-generation Helix aircraft to the market.
Beyond the personal Helix, Pivotal has also dedicated years to the development of BlackFly, an aircraft tailored for defense and first-responder applications. This specialized eVTOL recently made headlines last month for its inaugural emergency response in North Carolina, where it reportedly outpaced a parallel ambulance response by a remarkable 20 minutes. With over 10,000 flights logged, BlackFly underscores Pivotal’s commitment to diverse AAM solutions. The company’s standing in the burgeoning eVTOL sector is further solidified by its inclusion in the Federal Aviation Administration’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program, a nationwide initiative aimed at accelerating the testing and integration of such advanced aircraft.
