This meticulously constructed replica town aims to provide hands-on training in a secure setting, moving beyond traditional classroom instruction to directly engage with the consumer and enterprise technologies frequently targeted by sophisticated malicious actors. The urgency for such advanced training is underscored by the FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report, which, based on over a million complaints, recorded a staggering $20.9 billion in U.S. cybercrime losses – a 26% surge from the previous year – with ransomware identified as the most significant ongoing threat to critical infrastructure.
Officially designated the Kinetic Cyber Range, this specialized facility, operational since February 2025, meticulously replicates a typical American community. It encompasses fully appointed residences, a hotel, a service station, a grocery store, a judicial building, a medical center, and even a power utility, all interconnected by functional roads and traffic signals. Since its inception, the agency reports that over 1,400 individuals, including FBI personnel and partners from various federal and local agencies, have undergone training within its realistic confines.
Every segment of this simulated environment is equipped with operational devices and integrated systems designed to behave authentically, mirroring their real-world counterparts in both residential and commercial settings. Crucially, the design ensures that all simulated cyber incidents remain contained within the facility’s boundaries, preventing any external impact.

Complementing the physical town is a robust data center, housing over 200 physical servers operating on both Windows and Linux platforms.
