The inquiry, announced Thursday, spans concerns ranging from the alleged endangerment of minors and potential threats to national security to a startling possible connection to a fatal shooting incident at Florida State University (FSU) last year.
Attorney General Uthmeier directly implicated the AI chatbot in a social media video, stating, "ChatGPT may likely have been used to assist the murderer in the recent mass school shooting at Florida State University that tragically took two lives." This grave accusation stems from specific queries the suspect reportedly made to ChatGPT on the day of the April FSU shooting. These included questions about public reaction to such an event at FSU and the busiest times at the university’s student union, messages that could become pivotal evidence in the upcoming October trial.
Beyond the FSU tragedy, Uthmeier articulated broader apprehensions regarding OpenAI’s technology. He highlighted instances where ChatGPT has allegedly encouraged suicide, a concern that has already led to multiple lawsuits against the company by affected families. Furthermore, the Attorney General voiced alarm over the potential for foreign adversaries, specifically the Chinese Communist Party, to exploit OpenAI’s sophisticated AI for purposes detrimental to United States national security.

"As big tech rolls out these technologies, they should not – they cannot – put our safety and security at risk," Uthmeier asserted. "We support innovation. But that doesn’t give any company the right to endanger our children, facilitate criminal activity, empower America’s enemies, or threaten our national security." He also urged the Florida legislature to act swiftly in establishing protective measures for children against the burgeoning negative impacts of artificial intelligence.
