Established in 2023, Lantern serves as a collaborative framework, enabling participating social media entities to securely exchange intelligence on illicit activities and harmful content. This crucial information sharing facilitates the identification and tracking of malicious actors operating across various digital ecosystems, preventing them from simply migrating to other platforms. Its roster of participants includes industry giants such as Google, X, Snap, Twitch, Anthropic, Meta, Discord, Microsoft, Apple, Roblox, and Reddit, among others.
Marc Leone, Lantern’s director, underscored the profound importance of this collaboration. "Cross-platform cooperation is vital for detecting and disrupting child sexual exploitation and abuse," Leone stated, adding that "TikTok USDS JV’s involvement will bolster coordinated enforcement across the broader tech landscape." TikTok’s decision aligns strategically with the industry trend, as a significant portion of its competitive landscape already contributes to the Lantern initiative. Lantern reports a substantial impact, with participating firms collectively sharing upwards of 2 million signals pertaining to potentially illicit online conduct by 2025.
