Hustler Words – Mazama Energy, a pioneering geothermal startup, has successfully secured an impressive $135 million in an oversubscribed Series B funding round. This substantial capital infusion is set to propel the company’s ambitious plans to harness super-hot rock geothermal energy, a technology increasingly viewed as an emerging contender in the race to power the burgeoning demands of AI data centers and other significant grid loads.
The latest investment round saw leadership from Centaurus Capital and Doerr Capital. Notable participants included industry giants ConocoPhillips and Shell Ventures. Existing backers like Khosla Ventures, which incubated Mazama, and Gates Frontier, reaffirmed their commitment, joined by new investors SiteGround Capital, H. Barton Asset Management, and the Jeffrey and Marieke Rothschild Foundation.
This fresh capital is earmarked for the development of advanced horizontal wells designed to tap into extremely hot subterranean rock formations. Each of these innovative wells is projected to generate a substantial 15 megawatts of electricity. Mazama’s methodology involves drilling significantly deeper than conventional geothermal projects, reaching depths of approximately 15,000 feet. At these profound levels, temperatures can soar to 750°F (400°C), transforming water into a "supercritical" fluid. This unique state, neither fully liquid nor gas, possesses an extraordinary capacity to absorb and transfer energy, enabling Mazama’s wells to potentially produce up to ten times more power than traditional geothermal systems.

The company anticipates commencing electricity generation as early as next year. Its inaugural site in Oregon, initially estimated by investor Vinod Khosla to yield 5 gigawatts, has now seen its potential sharply revised upwards to an astounding 10 gigawatts. While the Oregon facility is still in its nascent stages, Mazama has already secured additional land for a second development. The long-term vision for the first site aims for completion by 2030, at which point it is expected to contribute 200 megawatts to the grid.
