Hustler Words – Bluesky, the burgeoning decentralized social network, is making a significant leap beyond conventional social platforms with the introduction of Attie, an innovative artificial intelligence assistant. This new application is engineered to empower users with unprecedented control, enabling them to construct bespoke content feeds, design their own algorithmic preferences, and even "vibe-code" future applications. The initiative marks a pivotal moment in user autonomy within the digital landscape.
Unveiled at the recent Atmosphere conference, Attie was presented by Jay Graber, Bluesky’s former CEO and now Chief Innovation Officer, alongside CTO Paul Frazee. Conference attendees are set to become the inaugural beta testers for this groundbreaking experience. At its core, Attie harnesses Anthropic’s Claude AI, integrating it seamlessly with Bluesky’s foundational AT Protocol (atproto) to create an agentic social application.

"This is a brand-new offering, distinct from the main Bluesky application," clarified interim CEO Toni Schneider in an interview. Schneider, who also serves as a partner at Bluesky backer True Ventures, elaborated, "While we’ve integrated many features into Bluesky itself – like Starter Packs and custom feeds – Attie stands alone. It represents the first major product developed by Jay’s dedicated new team."

Attie simplifies the process of creating personalized feeds. Users can simply input commands using natural language, much like interacting with any modern AI chatbot. Upon signing in with their Atmosphere login (which encompasses any atproto-powered application, including Bluesky), Attie intelligently comprehends user discussions and preferences. This capability stems from Bluesky’s open ecosystem, which facilitates data sharing across its interconnected applications.
The AI assistant allows users to query for recommended posts or content to repost, and crucially, to curate a custom feed tailored precisely to their interests. "You dictate its function, you mold its output, all without needing to write a single line of code or understand complex feed configurations," Schneider emphasized. He sees this as a foundational step towards enabling a broader community to build upon the Atmosphere protocol. Schneider further highlighted Attie’s design philosophy: "It is an AI product, yet it is profoundly people-centric… We believe AI is a potent technology, and our goal is to wield it for genuine user benefit."
Initially, Attie will facilitate the creation and viewing of these custom feeds, which will subsequently be accessible within Bluesky or any other atproto application. The long-term vision includes empowering Attie users to "vibe-code" their own social applications and develop tools for others, pushing the boundaries of user-driven development.
Schneider revealed that Graber and her team commenced work on Attie several months prior, coinciding with Graber’s decision to transition back to product development rather than corporate management. "I believe she recognized a vast landscape of possibilities she wished to build, and the CEO role consumed too much of her time," Schneider told hustlerwords.com. "As she gained more freedom, it became evident that this is where she thrives. She’s an exceptional leader and visionary, and we want her focused on creation, not company operations."
Graber herself articulated a core tenet behind Attie’s development: "We believe AI should serve people, not platforms." She argues that major platforms currently deploy AI primarily for self-serving objectives—maximizing user engagement, harvesting data, and controlling algorithms. An open protocol, she asserts, places this power directly into users’ hands, enabling them to construct personalized feeds, develop software aligned with their desires, and effectively discern signal from noise.
Graber’s renewed focus on protocol and product innovation follows Bluesky’s announcement of securing $100 million in additional funding, a round that concluded last year. This substantial investment provides the company with over three years of operational runway, signaling stability and security for the entire ecosystem. The funding also equips Bluesky to tackle future challenges, including enhancing privacy controls within the protocol and exploring monetization strategies for its rapidly growing user base of 43.4 million.
Schneider unequivocally stated that crypto integration is not on the horizon, despite the financial backing from several crypto-affiliated investors. This assurance addresses concerns among some Bluesky users regarding potential influxes of crypto scams or the platform’s transformation into a payment tool. "These investors were drawn to crypto for its decentralization principles, and they invested in highly decentralized blockchain projects," Schneider explained regarding Bluesky’s backers. "This is decentralized social, so it aligns with those who believe in the platform and the ecosystem’s potential."
Regarding monetization, the team is exploring various avenues. While Attie’s pricing model is still under consideration during its private beta phase, other ideas include subscription services and hosting solutions for communities wishing to operate on the protocol. Schneider, formerly CEO of Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com), envisions the Atmosphere protocol’s potential mirroring that of WordPress.
"At the heart of [the Atmosphere] lies a completely open system, inviting universal participation," he stated. "This allows for a multitude of independent, decentralized components to collaborate. With WordPress, this evolved into an immense ecosystem, generating over $10 billion annually. It became incredibly vast, despite its completely decentralized nature. This is the aspiration we hold for the Atmosphere – to foster a similar capacity for numerous apps and services to coexist, interoperate, and cultivate a thriving ecosystem."
