Hustler Words – Airbus has issued a mandatory software update for approximately 6,000 of its A320 family aircraft following concerns that intense solar radiation could interfere with critical flight control systems. The move, which resulted in flight delays and cancellations worldwide, comes after an internal investigation revealed a potential vulnerability to data corruption caused by powerful solar events.
The aerospace giant stated that "analysis of a recent event involving an A320 Family aircraft has revealed that intense solar radiation may corrupt data critical to the functioning of flight controls." While Airbus has not explicitly named the incident, Reuters, citing industry insiders, connects the software update to an October 30 JetBlue flight originating from Cancun, Mexico, and bound for Newark, New Jersey. This flight reportedly experienced a sudden loss of altitude, necessitating an emergency landing in Tampa, Florida.

According to reports, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued an emergency airworthiness directive, mandating that affected aircraft revert to a previous software version before resuming operations. Airbus also indicated that a smaller portion of the affected fleet will require hardware modifications to mitigate the identified risk. The situation highlights the increasing importance of safeguarding aircraft systems against the unpredictable effects of space weather.
